Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) is the only Government Institution currently training students at the undergraduate and the graduate levels in Civil Engineering.  Most of these trained professionals normally end up at the managerial level in organizations they work, usually after a period of induction or internship training to sharpen their professional skills.  The Department of Civil Engineering’s CBT concept provides skilled middle level manpower to industries for the socio economic development of the nation. The concept is an educational system which focuses on acquisition of competencies (knowledge and skills) necessary to perform professional required by industry players. This method of training very well prepares graduates not only for the job market, but also develops their total personality to become self-sufficient and independent entrepreneurs.

The Department started running the CBT BTech (Top-up) degree programme in 2010 to provide academic and professional progression path for the HND graduates and the first batch of students were successfully graduated in 2012.  There are currently only two (2) Technical Universities running the CBT BTech Civil Engineering as a top-up degree for the HND graduates – Kumasi and Takoradi Technical Universities. With the current expansion of the mission and mandate of Technical Universities following the conversion, it has become expedient for the department to run the Bachelor of Technology program as a fresh program with four year duration so that Senior High School leavers can enroll straightaway.

The aim of the CBT Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering programme is to train students with sound practical and theoretical background in design and entrepreneurial skills to take up the design and supervisory role in the Civil Engineering Industry. They will also be adequately prepared with the requisite skills to set up their own small and medium scale industries.

The main objective of the programme is to produce professional Engineers who will be able to analyse, design, construct and maintain Civil Engineering works and systems. At the end of the programme, the BTech graduate will be able to:

• Design and supervise the construction of Concrete, Steel and Timber structures;
• Carry out Geotechnical Investigations;
• Design and supervise the construction and maintenance of Water and Sanitation systems;
• Manage Civil Engineering projects that are entrepreneurial; and
• Carry out research and link up with industry.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must have HND (First Class or Second Class Upper Division) in Civil Engineering with a minimum of two (2) years working experience.

Second Class Lower Division holders will have to attend an interview.
