The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the pioneer Departments established under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) since 1993.Since its inception, the Department has run Higher National (HND) Mechanical Engineering under Four (4) sections with four (4) options; Plant Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Production Engineering and Metallurgy and Foundry Engineering. In 2020, growing numbers in the Department necessitated the birth of the Automotive and Agricultural Mechanization Engineering Department as a separate Department.
Since 2018 the department has been running four-year and Top-up BTech programmes in various options of Mechanical Engineering. Currently, the Department runs Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Bachelor of Science (BSc) programmes in Mechanical Engineering. Master of Science (MSc), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in Mechanical Engineering are in the offing under the various afore-mentioned disciplines. The Mechanical Engineering Department currently hosts three (3) sections; Plant, Manufacturing, Metallurgy and Refrigeration and Airconditioning sections to enable students to have wide range knowledge and skills necessary to solve industrial problems both locally and abroad..
The Department has highly trained staff and technicians focussed on ensuring the highly skilled graduates are produced. It can also boast of state-of-the-art laboratories (AVIC and AMATROL) and workshops which will ensure students access highest quality hands-on practical training.
Currently, the department runs HND programmes in plant, production and metallurgy and foundry engineering respectively. Additionally, it runs Bachelor of Technology programmes in Mechanical Engineering. Master of Technology Programmes are in the offing.
The Department also encourages student-led activities through its student association, Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA).
To develop the capacity to impart sufficient knowledge to students through top-notch training so that our graduates would be adequately resourced to function in any competitive environment where premium is placed on continuous and progressive improvement and to carve a niche for ourselves as a widely recognized hub for training and equipping students with world class employable skills.
To achieve this vision, the department strives to produce competent graduates who under minimum or no supervision will be able to:
The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to generate knowledgeable, skilled, innovative, entrepreneurial and problem-solving graduates with a solid grasp of mechanical engineering principles who can significantly contribute to the activities of the industrial sectors in Ghana and abroad.
The Department espouses values including Integrity, Trailblazing, Inclusiveness, Commitment and Equal Opportunities and sustainable utilisation of the environment.
We require staff and students to be honest and require them to uphold strong moral principles.
We pioneer innovations and inventions in mechanical engineering projects and research to address local and national challenges.
We embrace the belief that all people have value and the right to belong.
We are dedicated to fulfilling our mandate to meet the expectations of all stakeholders.
